Rock and gravel installation
Decorative rock is the ground cover for most Arizona yards. It uses no water, holds up to the heat and gives the yard a clean, finished surface between plants, paving and turf.
We grade the ground first, then spread locally sourced rock to an even depth. Choices of color, size and texture, along with boulders and river rock, give a yard its character.

What we install
Decomposed granite and gravel
The standard desert ground cover, available in a range of colors and sizes.
River rock
Smooth, rounded stone used for dry creek beds, borders and contrast against granite.
Boulders
Large accent stones set partly into the ground so they look like they belong there.
Rock refresh
Topping up or replacing thin, faded or mixed rock in an existing yard.
Materials and design
- Size
- Small rock is comfortable to walk on and compacts well. Larger rock stays put better on slopes and in heavy rain.
- Color
- Rock color should work with the house, the roof and the pavers. Seeing samples on site in daylight is the reliable way to choose.
- Depth and edges
- An even layer deep enough to cover the soil keeps the yard looking finished. Borders keep rock out of turf and off paving.
Built for Arizona
- Rock needs no water and very little upkeep, which suits the climate and most HOA landscape guidelines.
- Grading before the rock goes down directs monsoon runoff away from the house and prevents washouts.
- Lighter rock reflects more heat. Darker rock absorbs it, which can matter next to plants and seating.
How the installation goes
Installed by Horizon’s own crew. We do not subcontract our landscape installations.
Clearing
We remove weeds, debris and old rock where needed.
Grading
The ground is shaped so water drains where it should.
Placing boulders
Boulders and river rock features are set first.
Spreading
Rock is delivered, spread to an even depth and raked out to the edges.

How do I choose a rock color?
Start with the colors already on the property, such as the house, roof tile and any pavers. We can bring or point you to samples so you can compare them in your own yard.
Will weeds come through the rock?
Rock reduces weeds but does not stop them completely, because seeds blow in and settle on top. Most Arizona yards are kept clear with periodic pre-emergent treatment.
Can you add rock to just part of the yard?
Yes. We install rock for front yards, back yards, side yards and individual planting beds, and we can match existing rock as closely as current supply allows.
