Landscape drainage solutions

Arizona gets little rain, but it arrives all at once. A monsoon storm can put more water on a yard in an hour than the ground can absorb, and if the yard is not shaped to move it, that water ends up against the house, across the patio or sitting in the lawn.

We fix drainage as part of a landscape project, when the ground is already open. The answer is usually a combination of regrading and drains that collect water and carry it to where it can safely go.

What we install

  • Regrading

Reshaping the ground so water runs away from the house and off hard surfaces.

  • Drains

Catch basins, channel drains and buried pipe that collect water from low spots, patios and downspouts.

  • French drains

A gravel-filled trench with perforated pipe that picks up water soaking through the soil.

  • Swales and dry creek beds

Shallow channels lined with river rock that carry runoff and look like a landscape feature.

Materials and design

Where the water comes from
Roof downspouts, a neighbor's lot, a slope or a patio that pitches the wrong way each call for a different fix.
Where it can go
Water has to be taken to a point where it can leave or soak in without causing a problem for you or next door.
Hiding it
Drains can be set flush in paving or disguised under rock, so the solution does not spoil the yard.

Built for Arizona

  • Desert soil and the hard caliche layer under much of the Valley absorb water slowly, so runoff builds up fast.
  • Monsoon storms are short and intense. Drainage is sized for a downpour.
  • Many lots are graded by the builder with required drainage paths. New landscaping has to keep those working.

How the installation goes

Installed by Horizon’s own crew. We do not subcontract our landscape installations.

  1. Diagnosis

We find where water collects, where it comes from and where it can be sent.

  2. Plan

We choose the mix of grading and drains that solves it.

  3. Installation

The ground is regraded and drains and pipe are trenched in.

  4. Restoration

Rock, turf, planting or paving is finished over the top.

Common questions

Why does water pool in my yard after rain?

Usually because the ground slopes toward a low spot with nowhere for water to go, or because hard soil cannot absorb it fast enough. Regrading or a drain at the low point resolves most cases.

Can drainage be fixed without tearing up the whole yard?

Often. Many problems are solved with a drain line or regrading in one area. It is simplest and least costly to deal with during a landscape project.

Do you do drainage on its own?

We install drainage as part of landscape installations and renovations. Call us to talk through what you need.
