Hardscape and masonry

Hardscape is the built part of a landscape: the walls, steps, fire features and planters that give a yard its shape and stay the same in every season. Done well, it makes a yard feel designed. Done badly, it cracks and leans.

Our own crew builds masonry on proper footings and finishes it to suit the house and the paving around it.

5-year workmanship warranty

Every hardscape and masonry installation we build is covered by our 5-year workmanship warranty. The Arizona Registrar of Contractors holds contractors responsible for their workmanship for 2 years. We stand behind ours for more than twice that.

What we install

  • Seat walls

Low walls at sitting height that edge a patio and add seating without furniture.

  • Fire pits and fireplaces

Gas or wood-burning fire features built as the focal point of an outdoor room.

  • Steps and raised patios

Changes in level that are comfortable to walk and tie different parts of the yard together.

  • Planters and block walls

Raised planters, courtyard walls and screens for privacy and structure.

Materials and design

Finish
Stucco to match the house, stone veneer, or exposed decorative block. The finish decides the character of the feature.
Caps and details
A wall's cap is what people see and sit on. Stone, paver and cast caps each give a different look.
Footings
Every wall and feature sits on a concrete footing sized for its height and weight.

Built for Arizona

  • Footings and reinforcement are sized for soil that moves as it goes from bone dry to soaked in monsoon season.
  • Materials are chosen to cope with extreme heat and strong sun without fading or breaking down.
  • A fire feature extends the months an outdoor space is used through the mild Arizona winter.
  • Walls, fire features and gas lines can need permits or HOA approval. That is checked during planning.

How the installation goes

Installed by Horizon’s own crew. We do not subcontract our landscape installations.

  1. Design

We set the size, position and finish of each feature.

  2. Footings

Trenches are dug and concrete footings poured.

  3. Structure

Block is laid and reinforced, and gas or electrical lines are run where needed.

  4. Finish

Stucco or veneer is applied and the caps are set.

Common questions

Gas or wood for a fire pit?

Gas lights instantly, has no smoke or ash and can be used on no-burn days, but needs a gas line. Wood costs less to build and gives a traditional fire, with smoke and cleanup.

Can masonry match my house?

Yes. Stucco color and texture, stone and cap materials are selected to work with the house and with any pavers or travertine nearby.

Is hardscape covered by your warranty?

Yes. Our hardscape work carries a 5-year workmanship warranty.
