Sod installation

Nothing feels like real grass. A natural lawn stays cool underfoot in summer, which makes it the surface of choice for many families with kids and dogs.

Sod gives you a finished lawn the day it is laid. We prepare and grade the soil, check that the sprinklers cover every part of it, and lay the sod tight so it roots in evenly.

What we install

  • New lawns

A lawn laid on bare ground at a new home or after a renovation.

  • Lawn replacement

Removing a thin, weedy or patchy lawn and starting again on properly prepared soil.

  • Smaller lawns

Reducing a large lawn to the area you actually use, with rock, turf or planting around it.

  • Lawn with sprinklers

Sod and a new or reworked sprinkler system installed together.

Materials and design

Grass type
Bermuda grasses are the standard warm-season lawn in the Phoenix area. They thrive in heat and go dormant in winter.
Sun
Bermuda needs plenty of direct sun. Heavily shaded areas are better suited to turf, rock or planting.
Irrigation coverage
Even sprinkler coverage is what keeps a lawn uniformly green. It is checked before the sod goes down.

Built for Arizona

  • A natural lawn stays far cooler than artificial turf or paving in summer sun.
  • Warm-season grass goes brown in winter. Many homeowners overseed with ryegrass in fall for a green lawn through the cooler months.
  • A lawn is the thirstiest part of a desert yard, so it pays to size it for how it will be used.

How the installation goes

Installed by Horizon’s own crew. We do not subcontract our landscape installations.

  1. Removal

Old grass and weeds are taken out.

  2. Soil preparation

The soil is loosened, amended where needed and graded smooth.

  3. Sprinkler check

Coverage is tested and heads are adjusted or added.

  4. Laying

Sod is laid with staggered, tight joints, then rolled and watered in.

Common questions

When is the best time to lay sod in Arizona?

Bermuda sod establishes best in the warm months when it is actively growing, roughly late spring through early fall.

How much water does new sod need?

New sod needs frequent, light watering for the first couple of weeks while it roots, then less often and more deeply. We set the controller for establishment and explain how to step it down.

Do you mow or maintain lawns?

No. We install lawns. We do not offer mowing or ongoing lawn care.
